Cami walked into the station back in uniform.
Franny hugged her. âIâm so sorry about Juan. About all of this. Iâ¦I just canât believe something this awful could happen here in sweet little Shady Valley.â
âMe, either. If youâd told me a few weeks ago this could happen, I would have told you no way. Is the boss in?â
âHe is, but heâs very cranky. You better not call him that today. Actually, Iâve never seen him quite like this in all the years Iâve worked with him.â
âReally? Whatâs he doing?â
âHeâs yelling at people. Even yelled at me.â
âWow. Weâre all on edge but that doesnât sound like him at all. Whatâs the problem?â
âHeâs been trying to find out where Lonnie is so he can talk to him, but the FBI keeps stonewalling him. They said he could talk to him on the phone, but Stanleyâs insisting on seeing him in person. And they wonât give him the location.â
âWith all thatâs come to light about Becca and Juan, I donât think Lonnieâs the key to finding Angie. Though Iâm glad he got caught.â
âI agree but Stanleyâs not listening to me or the FBI.â
âWish me luck.â She walked over and knocked on Stanleyâs door.
âCome in.â It sounded more like a bark than an invitation.
She walked in.
Stanley motioned for her to sit down. The phone was up to his ear. âI donât care what you say. Lonnie Ellsworth is wanted in regard to a missing personâs case here. His fiancée. I want to talk to him. In person. And Iâll keep calling up the chain until I find someone who has the authority to make that happen.â
She sat down.
His face turned bright red, making his startling blue eyes even more startling. âWhen did money become more important than a person? I want to talk to your supervisor.â He wrote down a name and number. âI need to talk to him in person, not on the phone.â A pause. âWeâll see about that.â Stanley slammed the phone down. âCan you believe this? Theyâre refusing to tell me where he is. Refusing to let me talk to him. As if they donât trust me.â
âIt sounded as though they said you could talk to him on the phone.â
âThe phone.â He rolled his eyes. âWhoever heard of doing an interrogation by phone. Just ridiculous.â
âI think you should calm down, Boâ¦â His withering look stopped her from completing the word.
âI should have listened to you from the start, Cami. I should have put you in charge of the case. Zack is taking this investigation off the rails.â
âThanks for the vote of confidence, but I think Zackâs being doing a good job. I donât think Lonnieâs criminal activities have anything to do with Angieâs disappearance. I believe theyâre just coincidental.â
His blue eyes burnt a hole in her forehead. âReally? You think all of this is just a happy little coincidence?â
âWellâ¦Iâ¦I must admit itâs all bizarre.â
Stanley shook his head. âItâs the last time I take a vacation. I leave for a few days, and all the criminals cut loose.
